Sunday 2/8 Entry

Josef Schulz

What drew me to this work was the vacancy. It is clear that the scene is man made, and yet not even the smallest trace of human presence is apparent. Schulz achieves his eerie aesthetic through tedious digital manipulation, but this is not immediately apparent. The bright, happy colors draw the viewer in to what, at first, seems to be just a remarkably clean landscape. Instead the viewer is left with a sense of what we all assume is supposed to be present.

Despite the fact that I'm trying not to do much post manipulation, this lack of presence is what I am also hoping to achieve, although perhaps less eerily.
